A brighter smile is one of the most requested cosmetic improvements — but the whitening industry is full of bold claims and hidden risks. Here's the science behind what actually works, what's safe, and what's worth spending money on.

Why Teeth Stain

Bright confident smile after whitening
Intrinsic and extrinsic staining require different treatment approaches.

Tooth discolouration falls into two categories. Extrinsic staining sits on the enamel surface — caused by coffee, tea, red wine, curry and tobacco. It responds well to whitening. Intrinsic staining occurs within the dentine layer — from tetracycline antibiotics, excessive fluoride during development (fluorosis), trauma, or ageing — and is far harder to treat; some cases require veneers rather than bleaching.

Home Whitening Options

🦷
Whitening Toothpastes
Contain mild abrasives or low-dose peroxide. Removes surface stain but cannot bleach dentine. Shade improvement: 1–2 levels max.
📦
OTC Strips & Gels
Contain 3–10% hydrogen peroxide. Noticeable improvement in 2–4 weeks. Results last 3–6 months. Risk of uneven coverage on misaligned teeth.
💊
Charcoal / "Natural" Products
No peer-reviewed evidence of bleaching efficacy. Highly abrasive — can erode enamel with repeated use. Not recommended by the BDA or ADA.
🏠
Dentist-Supplied Take-Home Kits
Custom-fitted trays with 10–22% carbamide peroxide. More effective than OTC strips; safer fit reduces gum irritation. 1–2 weeks daily use.

In-Chair Professional Whitening

Professional whitening uses 25–40% hydrogen peroxide gels, often with light activation (LED or laser). A complete treatment — typically 60–90 minutes — can lift teeth by 6–10 shades in a single session. Gum tissue is protected with a liquid dam, and the highly concentrated gel is applied only to tooth surfaces under clinical control.

💡
Combination Approach
The most effective and long-lasting results come from combining an in-chair session with a customised take-home tray kit for maintenance. This is what we recommend at Rohinish Dental.

Side-by-Side Comparison

Method Shade Improvement Duration Cost (approx.)
Whitening Toothpaste 1–2 shades 2–4 weeks ₹200–500
OTC Strips 2–4 shades 3–6 months ₹800–2,000
Take-Home (clinic kit) 4–6 shades 6–12 months ₹3,000–5,000
In-Chair (single session) 6–10 shades 6–12 months ₹8,000–18,000
In-Chair + Take-Home 8–12 shades 12–18 months ₹12,000–22,000

Safety: What to Know

Whitening is safe when performed correctly, but there are important caveats:

  • Temporary sensitivity during treatment affects about 38% of patients. It resolves within 24–48 hours; use a desensitising toothpaste during the whitening period.
  • Bleaching does not work on crowns, veneers, bonding or composite fillings — these must be replaced after whitening to match the new shade.
  • Whitening is contraindicated during pregnancy and in patients with severe gum disease or untreated cavities.
  • Overuse of high-concentration products can permanently damage enamel — always follow the recommended protocol.
⚠️
Not All Staining Responds to Bleaching
Tetracycline staining and fluorosis require porcelain veneers for optimal results. A clinical assessment at Rohinish Dental will determine the most effective approach for your specific discolouration.

Maintaining Your Results

1
Follow the "White Diet" for 48 hours
Immediately after treatment, avoid coffee, tea, red wine, curries and coloured sauces — pores in enamel remain open for 48 hours.
2
Use a straw for staining drinks
Redirects pigments past the front teeth. Particularly useful for daily coffee or tea drinkers.
3
Rinse immediately after staining foods
Even plain water rinse within 30 seconds significantly reduces surface pigmentation.
4
Top-up every 12–18 months
A single top-up application with your custom tray maintains results indefinitely.
