Most parents wait until their child has a toothache or a visible problem. The evidence says the first dental visit should happen much earlier — and earlier is dramatically better for your child's long-term oral health.

When to Schedule the First Visit

Paediatric dental check-up
The earlier a child visits the dentist, the more positive and anxiety-free future appointments become.

The American Academy of Paediatric Dentistry (AAPD) and the Indian Dental Association both recommend the first dental visit by age 1 — or within 6 months of the first tooth appearing, whichever comes first. In practice, most children in India see a dentist for the first time only when they have pain, by which point early decay has already progressed.

📅
The "First Tooth, First Visit" Rule
The moment your child's first tooth erupts (typically 6–10 months), that tooth is susceptible to decay. Schedule a dental visit within 6 months of that first eruption.

What Happens at the First Appointment

1
Gentle Introduction
The first visit is primarily about building trust — the dentist shows the child the mirror, the light, the chair. No treatment unless absolutely essential.
2
Quick Visual Examination
A count of erupted teeth, checking alignment, and looking for early signs of decay, tongue-tie or bite issues.
3
Parent Guidance
The dentist explains brushing technique for toddlers, appropriate fluoride toothpaste amounts, feeding habits, and when to expect the next teeth.
4
Fluoride Varnish (if appropriate)
A quick, painless application of fluoride varnish takes 1–2 minutes and significantly reduces cavity risk in toddlers.

Preparing Your Child

Children who are anxious about dental visits are almost always anxious because of adult anxiety transferred to them — either through their own hesitation or overheard conversations. Here's how to set a positive frame:

  • Use positive, simple language: "We're going to visit the tooth doctor to make sure your teeth are strong." Avoid phrases like "it won't hurt."
  • Read a children's book about visiting the dentist the week before — this normalises the experience.
  • Schedule the appointment in the morning when children are alert and less fatigued.
  • Never use the dentist as a threat — "if you don't brush, the dentist will pull your teeth" creates lasting dental phobia.
  • Bring a comfort toy or favourite book to hold in the waiting area.

Why Baby Teeth Matter More Than Most Parents Think

A common misconception is that baby (primary) teeth "don't matter because they fall out anyway." In fact, primary teeth serve critical functions:

🍎
Eating & Nutrition
Children with decayed or missing baby teeth eat less variety, affecting nutrition and growth during critical developmental years.
🗣️
Speech Development
Front teeth are critical for correct pronunciation of "f", "v", "th" and "s" sounds. Early loss causes speech impediments.
📐
Space Maintenance
Baby teeth hold space for permanent teeth. Early loss causes adjacent teeth to drift, crowding adult teeth before they even erupt.
🧠
Confidence & Socialisation
Children with visible dental decay or missing front teeth face social stigma that affects confidence and school performance.
